Mearle Zelma “Jewell”  Cornett, 85, of Dearing, passed away Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at Windsor Place in Coffeyville.

She was born August 22, 1924 at Locksburg, Arkansas to Jesse Franklin and Rosa May (Johnson) Slaton.  Jewell moved to Coffeyville with her family when she was young, she attended Coffeyville schools, graduating from Field Kindley High School.

On March 27, 1943 she married Arthur L. Cornett, Sr. at Coffeyville.  Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville for many years before moving to Dearing.  For many years they owned and operated the Bargain Barn.  Mr. Cornett preceded her in death in June of 1983.

She was a member of the Dearing Christian Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Judy Davenport and husband Leroy of Lawrenceville, VA; two sons, Arthur L. “Buddy” Cornett, Jr. and his wife Glenda of Afton, OK, and Stephen Cornett of Coffeyville, KS; one sister, Deloris Mathes of Texas; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, one daughter, two grandsons, three brothers, and three sisters.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 16, 2010 at the Fairview Cemetery Veterans Memorial Patio with Pastor Jamie Regis of the Dearing Christian Church officiating.

Friends may call on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.

The family suggests memorials to the Dearing Christian Church; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
