Obituary of Barbara Roberts

Barbara "Sue" Roberts, age 81, passed away surrounded by her children/family on Wednesday, February 28, 2018.

She was born July 10, 1936 in Coffeyville, Kansas and raised as an only child in the immediate area. She attended Coffeyville and Lenapah Schools before graduating from Lenapah High School in 1955.

Soon after graduation Sue began her Barrel Racing career which stretched into the 1980's. After winning the Girls Barrel Racing Association Championship in 1959 and placing first at the Fort Worth Stock Show, Sue turned professional and qualified for the National Finals Rodeo on 3 separate occasions. She was a member of the Drill Team for the Coffeyville Riding Club. Sue loved animals. She bred, raised and trained many of the horses she rode. Ranching was also in her blood as she helped operate the family ranch in northern Nowata County.

Sue married James D. "Jim" Roberts on September 29, 1956. After their marriage, the couple resided in rural Coffeyville, Kansas before moving the family ranch outside South Coffeyville, Oklahoma in 1976. In 1957 she gave birth to her daughter Wahnee Sue and her son Kenneth James the following year in 1958. Her son Shawn Lee was born in 1967.

Her hobbies included sewing as she made all of her clothing used in her rodeo career as well as leather crafts making her own tack and saddle, repaired belts, etc.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents Doris and Fred Baragar, as well as still born son. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Wahnee and Jesus Jasso of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, her son and daughter-in-law Ken and Mary Roberts of rural South Coffeyville, Oklahoma and her son and daughter-in-law Shawn and Christie Roberts of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Four grandchildren, Justin Roberts of Nowata, Oklahoma, Katie Forth of Copan, Oklahoma, Susana Jasso of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Jesse Jasso of Tulsa, Oklahoma along with five great grandchildren.

Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the North Edna Cemetery in Edna, Kansas with Pastor Jimmy Harrington officiating.

Friends may call on Monday, March 5, 2018 at David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville to sign the guest register from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
